Wonder on 24 december

There was December 23rd, 18-year-old Leo hated Christmas: "I wish this holiday would just disappear" For Leo, Christmas was a celebration of forced joy, or constant dissatisfaction within the family, especially since his sister had died that day. He fell asleep furious.

He woke up to cramps. And then he felt a weight in his lower abdomen, a woman's legs peeking out from under a soft flannel nightgown, and a woman's breasts. Leo gasped and look down- only to see that he had become a woman, and that he was pregnant, too.

He glanced around the room. Hanging on the door were stockings—each with a name on it. His name was replaced by Lena. He would also see a large mirror in which he could examine his new figure.

Suddenly, his mother burst in with hot cocoa.  "Good, you're up! The doctor ordered bed rest, but I know you. You can't sit still when your little one is kicking up a storm."

"Little one?" Leo rasped.

Everything was different. The house smelled of cinnamon and mistletoe. Pictures hung on the walls: not of him, or rather, of him, but as a woman. Then his sister—to his surprise—brought in a plate of peppermint cookies. "Sister, the baby will be born prematurely if you stress out like that," she joked.

Leo felt panic rising, and tears welled up at the sight of his sister alive.

And yet the love there was undeniable. Every gesture, every carol sung out of tune at dinner, every hand resting on her belly—they were imbued with a tenderness Leo had never known.

The next years, as snow blanketed the world outside, Leo sat by the fire, the baby stirring within him like a silent secret.  His/her hand instinctively moved to calm him. A wave of sudden, sudden protection washed over him.

Tears welled in his eyes. For years, he had armored himself against Christmas, against family, against weakness, because all of it reminded him of loss. Now it was different . Christmas didn't demand joy from him—it simply was…

On December 24th, as midnight approached, Lena closed her eyes and rested her hand on his son, feeling utterly overwhelmed.
